Populous - formerly HOK Sport - has landed the design job for a new 12,500-seat arena in Leeds
According to John Barrow, senior principle with Populous, work is ongoing on the concept design and should be finalised by July or August this year, with the planning process to commence on completion.
‘Construction could start as soon as late 2010, which would be beneficial as it will take advantage of the current downturn in prices,’ he said.
Work began this month to clear the site on Claypit Lane, on the northern edge of the city centre. Populous is working in conjunction with the UK’s Jacobs, which has a framework agreement with Leeds City Council.
The award comes as Populous continues with two major Olympic projects. The firm is currently working with the St. Petersburg Institute of Urban Studies on the masterplan for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. It was also recently awarded the ‘overlay contract’ at the Olympic 2012 site in East London, with an estimated £350 million value.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) appointed the firm, together with Allies & Morrison and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, to carry out the massive job of fitting out all the new buildings and ensuring they, and temporary venues, are fit for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
